In the Shipibo tradition, a curandero is a trained healer who works with plant medicines, icaros, and spiritual tools to diagnose and treat illness.### Not a ShamanThe term "shaman" is commonly used by Western visitors, but it is not a Shipibo word. It originates from the Tungusic peoples of Siberia and was later applied broadly to indigenous healers worldwide by Western anthropologists. Most Shipibo healers refer to themselves as curanderos, maestros, or by Shipibo language terms. Using the word shaman is not offensive to most practitioners, but it does obscure the specificity of the Shipibo tradition.### A Healer, Not a PriestA curandero's primary function is healing. They are not religious leaders, community administrators, or political figures, though they may be respected in all these domains. Their authority comes from their demonstrated ability to help people heal. A curandero who cannot heal loses standing regardless of any other qualities they possess.### Specialists Within the TraditionNot all curanderos are identical. Some specialize in specific types of healing: bone setting, herbal remedies, ceremonial work, or spiritual extraction. The most accomplished curanderos have broad competence across multiple areas, but specialization is recognized and respected. A healer who knows their limitations and refers patients to others when appropriate demonstrates wisdom, not weakness.

Years of TrainingBecoming a curandero is a commitment measured in years and decades, not months or weekends.### The TimelineA minimum of five to seven years of dedicated training is considered necessary to begin working independently. Many healers train for ten, fifteen, or twenty years before they feel fully confident in their abilities. And even then, they continue learning. The deepening never stops.Compare this to other demanding professions. A surgeon trains for at least a decade after college. A concert musician practices for decades. The curandero's training is comparable in duration and intensity, though the methods are entirely different.### Under a MasterTraining happens under the guidance of an established curandero who takes responsibility for the apprentice's development and safety. The Dieta ProcessDieta is the engine of curandero training. Without it, the rest is impossible.### What Dieta Means HereIn the context of curandero training, dieta refers to extended periods of isolation during which the apprentice works with a specific master plant. This involves strict dietary restrictions, sexual abstinence, minimal social contact, and deep immersion in the jungle environment.The purpose of dieta is to create conditions under which the plant spirit can communicate with the apprentice. The restrictions remove sensory noise. The isolation removes social distraction. What remains is the apprentice and the plant, in direct relationship.### What Happens During DietaThe plant is administered according to the master's instructions. Over days and weeks, the apprentice begins to perceive communications from the plant spirit. These may come as dreams, visions, physical sensations, or icaros. The quality and clarity of these communications increase as the dieta progresses and the apprentice's sensitivity sharpens.Difficult material also surfaces during dieta. The apprentice confronts their fears, unresolved traumas, and character weaknesses. This personal healing is not a side effect of the training. It is a prerequisite. A healer who has not addressed their own wounds will carry that unresolved material into ceremonial work, where it can contaminate or distort the healing process.### Multiple Dietas Over YearsA single dieta is one step in a long journey. The curandero in training will complete many dietas with many different plants over the course of their apprenticeship. Each plant adds a new dimension to their capabilities. The master determines which plants to work with and in what sequence, building the apprentice's healing toolkit systematically.

Responsibilities During CeremonyWhen a curandero leads ceremony, they carry responsibility for every person in the room. This is not a metaphorical responsibility. It is a practical one with real consequences.### Reading the RoomThroughout ceremony, the curandero monitors the energetic state of each participant. This involves perceiving patterns, blockages, intrusions, and shifts in real time across multiple people simultaneously. It is demanding work that requires sustained concentration over many hours.The information gathered through this monitoring guides every decision the healer makes: which icaros to sing, when to visit individual participants, when to increase or decrease the intensity of the work, and when to intervene if someone is struggling.### Singing and DirectingThe curandero selects and sings icaros throughout the ceremony. These songs are not performed in a predetermined sequence. The healer responds to what they perceive in the moment, choosing songs that address the specific needs arising in the room. This improvisation within a traditional framework requires deep knowledge and refined intuition.### Individual AttentionAt some point during ceremony, the healer typically visits each participant individually. They sit before the person, assess their energetic state, and sing personal icaros directly into the person's energy field. They may also blow tobacco smoke, apply agua florida, or perform other healing interventions based on what they find.### Protection and SafetyThe curandero maintains the protective container throughout the ceremony. If they perceive a threat to the space or to an individual, they respond with protective icaros, tobacco, and energetic intervention. This protective function is constant and non negotiable. A ceremony without adequate protection is unsafe, regardless of the quality of the medicine.### ClosingWhen the work is complete, the curandero closes the ceremony with specific protocols: closing icaros, tobacco, and the gradual returning of the space to ordinary conditions. This closing process is as important as the opening. It ensures that participants transition safely back to ordinary awareness.

Finding a Genuine CuranderoThe growing international interest in plant medicine has created a marketplace where distinguishing genuine healers from opportunistic ones can be challenging.### Questions to AskWhen evaluating a retreat center and its healers, consider these questions:- How long did the healer train? A genuine curandero will have years, not months, of training. Be specific in your questioning- Who was their master? A real healer can name their teacher and describe the lineage. If this information is unavailable or vague, be cautious- How many plant dietas have they completed? A well trained curandero will have completed numerous dietas over their career. This is verifiable information- Do they continue to diet? Even established healers must maintain their practice through periodic dietas. A healer who no longer diets is coasting on diminishing capacity### Red FlagsBe wary of:- Healers who cannot or will not discuss their training in specific terms- Retreat centers that emphasize the facility's amenities over the healers' qualifications- Claims of healing abilities acquired through brief training periods- Healers who exhibit signs of material abuse, inappropriate boundaries, or ego driven behavior- Centers that market individual ceremony as a complete healing package without emphasizing the importance of preparation and integration### What Genuine Looks LikeAn authentic curandero tends to be humble about their abilities while confident in their practice. They speak about their work with respect and seriousness. They maintain their own health through ongoing dieta and practice. They do not oversell or overpromise.
