There are hundreds of healing retreat centers in South America alone. They range from deeply traditional to barely legitimate. Choosing the right one is one of the most important decisions you will make in this process. The wrong center can be ineffective at best and dangerous at worst. The right center creates a container for some of the most meaningful experiences of your life.## What "Right" MeansThe right retreat is not the most expensive one. It is not the one with the best website. It is not the one your friend loved. The right retreat is the one that matches your needs, your values, and your level of experience. The internet makes this both easier and harder. Easier because information is available. Harder because marketing is sophisticated and a beautiful website does not equal a safe experience. Some of the most legitimate traditional centers have the simplest online presence. Some of the most polished websites belong to centers with questionable practices.### Two CategoriesWhen evaluating a retreat, think in two categories: non negotiables (things every safe, legitimate center must have) and fit (things that depend on your personal preferences and situation).
These are the baseline requirements. If a center does not meet these, do not book. No matter how nice the photos look.## 1. Qualified, Experienced HealersThe healer should have a clear lineage and years of training. In the Shipibo tradition, this means completing multiple extended plant dietas under a master healer. Ask about their background. If the center is vague, move on.## 2. Medical ScreeningEvery center should screen participants for medications, mental health conditions, and relevant medical history before allowing them to participate. Centers that skip screening are putting you at risk.## 3. Safety ProtocolsWhat happens if someone has a medical emergency? Is there trained support staff during ceremony? How far is the nearest medical facility? These questions should have clear answers.### 4. Transparent CommunicationA trustworthy center responds to your questions openly and thoroughly. They do not dodge difficult questions. They do not use high pressure sales tactics. They do not promise specific outcomes. Read our guide on questions to ask before booking.Without these five non-negotiables, nothing else matters. A center with beautiful facilities but no medical screening is a liability, not a sanctuary.## 5. Ethical PracticesIndigenous led centers that fairly compensate their healers and support local communities are operating ethically. The Chacruna Institute provides resources on ethical practices in the plant medicine space.
Once the non negotiables are met, these factors help you find the right match.## Tradition and ApproachDo you want a strictly traditional Shipibo experience? A blend of traditions? A center that incorporates Western psychological frameworks? Know what resonates with you.## Group SizeSmaller groups (6 to 12 people) generally offer more individual attention. Larger groups (15 to 25) may feel more communal but less personal. Neither is inherently better.## Amenities vs SimplicitySome centers offer private rooms, hot showers, and comfortable beds. Others are rustic with shared spaces and cold water. More amenities is not automatically better. Sometimes the simplicity is part of the medicine.### LocationMost traditional centers are in the Peruvian Amazon. Others are in the Sacred Valley or other regions. Climate, altitude, and accessibility differ significantly between locations.## Duration OptionsDoes the center offer the length of stay you need? Some only offer fixed programs (7 days, 14 days). Others, like more traditional centers, offer flexible durations. Read our guide on how long to stay.## Integration SupportDoes the center offer support after you leave? Integration is where the real work begins. Some centers provide follow-up calls, online community groups, or referrals to integration therapists. Others end their involvement when you walk out the door. Post-retreat support can make the difference between insights that transform your life and insights that fade within weeks.## LanguageIf you do not speak Spanish, is there translation available during ceremony and consultations? This is important for communication with the healer.
